چکیده

This paper considers fundamental performance issues of closed-loop tra c management for ABR service. ABR service is designed to utilize network resource e ciently by dynamically adjusting each connection's transmission rate. ABR ow control protocols attempt to achieve this objective by estimating available network bandwidth and convey this information to the source. However, it is not clear how such ow control protocols will perform under varying network operating conditions. This paper presents performance results for ABR ow control schemes under time-varying available network bandwidth. We show the e ective frequency range under which an ABR tra c management objective can be met. Our results demonstrate the limitations of ABR ow control protocols and o er practical guidelines for the implementation of ABR ow control algorithms.

E ective Frequency Range of Rate-Based Closed-Loop Congestion Control for ABR Service

The Available Bit Rate (ABR) service class has been de ned by the ATM Forum. Closed-loop ratebased congestion control has been adopted by the ATM Forum as the standard approach for supporting ABR service in ATM networks. This paper examines congestion control mechanisms for ABR service and presents fundamental performance results for rate-based tra c management schemes under varying available b...

Integrated Control of Connection Admission, Flow Rate, and Bandwidth for ATM Based Networks

We consider the combined control problem of connection admission, flow rate, and bandwidth allocation (capacity, service-rate) under nonstationary conditions. A fluid flow model in state variable form describes the time varying mean behaviour of Available Bit Rate (ABR) traffic, which competes with Guaranteed Traffic for network resources. Using nonlinear control we derive an integrated control...

Congestion Detection Methods and Their Impact on the Performance of the Abr Flow Control Mechanism

The support of the ABR service category is a key feature for future ATM networks to allow an economical transmission of applications with vague requirements for throughput and delay. The idea behind the ABR service is to convey feedback information about the network congestion status from the network elements to the end systems in order to dynamically adapt the transmission rates of the ABR sou...

Rate-based Scheme for Atm Flow Control

ATM is representative of the connection-oriented resource provisioning class of protocols. The ATM network is expected to provide end-to-end QoS guarantees to connections in the form of bounds on delays, errors and/or losses. Performance management in ATM network depend upon different parameters. ABR flow control is one of the important parameter for performance management. In this paper, we sh...

The Impact of Handover Protocols on the Performance of ABR Flow-Control Algorithms in a Wireless ATM Network

Considering the high-speed data transfer by the ABR service class in a wireless ATM network, we investigate the impact of forward and backward hard handover protocols on the performance of the three rate-based ABR flow-control schemes Explicit Rate Indication for Congestion Avoidance (ERICA+), Fuzzy Explicit Rate Marking (FERM) and a new promising adaptation of FERM, called FERMA. We evaluate t...
